Director Chris Bosse (WAF judge) recently participated in a seminar to support Australian architects to showcase their projects in the best light at the upcoming World Architecture Festival, in Singapore from 6 to 8 November 2024. 

AJC Architects hosted a World Architecture Festival (WAF) shortlist practice event and Paul Finch, the programme director of WAF, introduced the night live from London. The  event attracted over 80 guests, including prominent figures from leading architectural firms, who gathered to present their innovative projects and receive expert feedback.

LAVA is participating in a new exhibition "Wood's Up! – The Rise of Timber Buildings" at Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin.

On display will be our German Pavillon design for EXPO 2025, Osaka, Japan.

The exhibition presents 16 realised and planned timber buildings of different typologies exploring the use of timber and hybrid timber construction to conserve resources and reduce CO2 emissions. The projects at different scales demonstrate timber's flexibility, load-bearing capacity and prefabrication capabilities, and advantages in terms of thermal insulation, health and aesthetics.

Other firms on display include: David Chipperfield Architects, COOP HIMMELB(L)AU Wolf D. Prix & Partner and Snøhetta. 

Opening is Saturday 6 April.

Our energy storage tower in Heidelberg feeds energy into the grid at night or at times of high demand in order to cover peaks in demand. Like a giant thermos flask, it stores heat by storing hot water from the district heating network. And visitors will enjoy an integrated viewing platform at the top.

Christian Tschersich of LAVA together with Shajay Bhooshan of British firm Zaha Hadid Architects will be speaking at the international conference “Architecture and Metaverse,” which will be held in Rome at the Casa dell’Architettura (Piazza Manfredo Fanti 47) on Monday, 13 November, 2023, from 3 to 7 p.m.

What will be the future of architecture and the role of the architect in the Metaverse? What challenges and opportunities for designers? The vision of Zaha Hadid Architects and LAVA will foster discussion and create an opportunity for dialogue and professional exchange between Italian and international context.

Virtual worlds are freeing designers from physical limitations, rules and financial constraints. And transforming how we experience spaces.

LAVA’s exhibition at the Metaverse Architecture Biennale explores the potential of virtual worlds in reshaping real-world architecture. 

Just as Kazimir Malevich's Suprematism discarded notions of "top," "bottom," "left," and "right," architects operating within the metaverse are uniquely positioned to return to the foundational elements of spatial design. 

LAVA’s exhibition centres on crafting a space using a minimal surface to serve as both an internal-external boundary, a delineator of vast and intimate spaces, and a conduit for circulation. Simultaneously, this surface adopts a closed configuration, akin to a Möbius strip, enabling the continuous looping of space, enhancing its functionality, and introducing a novel dimension of quality. 

Multiple levels within the structure are interconnected by a single surface, which, as it gracefully twists at its zenith, enables the utilisation of both sides, while seamlessly transforming the path into an endless curve.

LAVA's Reloved Panton chair is on show at a new exhibition '1001 Remarkable Objects' at the Powerhouse Sydney. Also on show nearby - Marc Newson’s Lockheed lounge, Zaha Hadid shoes and Philip Starck lemon squeezer!

LAVA was one of several designers commissioned by the Powerhouse in 2010 to use a chair to tell a story about a loved piece of furniture. LAVA sliced up the 1967 Panton chair - it anticipated the digital revolution by 30 years and was the first freeform, organic moulded piece of furniture. LAVA represented this shape as slices, similar to an MRI scan, in order to make visible its complex three-dimensional geometry. The chair is metaphorically and physically carved out of a sliced box.

LAVA is currently participating in a temporary virtual exhibition "Metrotopia Metaverse" with its "Contract of Fiction Gallery".

Metrotopia, a collaboration between Zaha Hadid Architects and ArchAgenda, is a virtual exhibition at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. The display immerses visitors in a digital realm where they can explore and engage with contemporary architectural designs.

‘We invited leading firms to feature their most future-oriented work inside Metrotopia. Some of us noted that recent Biennales diverged from presenting the major architectural designs of our time. Yes! LAVA loves bicycles.

A recent article in BauNetz on the 'Day of the Bicycle' drew on several project by architects around the world working to make cycling infrastructure more extensive, safer and more comfortable worldwide. LAVA's first prize design for Heidelberg's new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Neckar River was one of them. HEIDELBERG BRIDGE

According to the United Nations, the bike is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally friendly means of transport. A symbol of sustainable transport that conveys a positive message for sustainable consumption.

The concept for the German Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka: an ensemble of cylindric buildings reflects on the motto “Mutually shaping a circular world”. 

13 APRIL 2023

The concept for the German Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan was revealed at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in Berlin. The pavilion, entitled "Wa! Germany", will showcase the concept of circular economy for a more sustainable society. 

Together with our partners GL Events and facts and fiction the pavilion seeks to be a truly circular experience, from the architecture and the exhibition, to the garden and the surroundings. We follow the formal language of the circle in the logo, exhibition and architecture. The guiding metaphor is in every aspect of the design: circularity.

It was a grey and windy day when 20 architects and engineers from LAVA and Wenzel + Wenzel gave the 286 steps of the helix staircase of the Heidelberg Energy Storage Centre a good workout! 

In one hour, quickly going up and down three times they each took 1716 steps - equivalent to 100 floors - testing the staircase vibrations in real time. A real time check with a moving load.  They got great exercise and enjoyed wonderful views ... The next stage as the project takes further steps towards completion.

More details:

The vibration test was a special event - it is often done with bridges or church towers, but normally covered by a DIN norm or not done at all for other buildings. It was a first experience for many of the architects.

Commissioned by PFEIFER Group (which celebrates its 444 jubilee year this year) Professor Goldlack from the University of Wuppertal set up site sensors directly connected to a computer.  The 20 participants quickly walked up the staircase with heavy steps, at one arm length distance from each other, without stopping until they reached the top. Three times!!! On the way down they continued the fast pace, to simulate the speed of people fleeing the building.

And yes, good news of course - the staircase passed.

Chris Bosse was in Singapore discussing LAVA's Vietnamese projects at a recent industry event.

LAVA has been in Vietnam for the past seven years. Significant projects include the design of the 16ha Ho Chi Minh Central Park, together with Aspect Studio. In Da Nang, LAVA designed DXMT’s mixed-use scheme Marie One Complex, the luxury apartment towers was inspired by the Marble Mountains and caves near Da Nang.

Held at Space Furniture Asia Hub, the event was jointly organised by Dat Xanh Mien Trung and EdgeProp Singapore .

The Heidelberg Municipal Council decided to commission the first-placed team from the two-stage competition – schlaich bergermann partner, LATZ UND PARTNER LANDSCHAFTSARCHITEKTUR and us – with further planning services up to approval planning. If all goes well, construction can begin in 2023.

From sketch to building: the key idea behind our design for the German Pavilion was clear from the earliest concept sketches: its an ensemble rather than a single-building body.

The interconnected building blocks not only refer to the EXPO2020DUBAI motto "Connecting minds, Creating the future", but also embody the central theme of CAMPUS GERMANY representing Germany as a platform for fostering the exchange of views and ideas, networking and communication.

We are about to finish the #CAMPUSGERMANY building!

With eight months to go until Expo 2020 Dubai opens in October 2021, structural work on the German Pavilion site is almost finished.

An average of 166 construction workers have been on the site every day since August 2019, clocking up around 472,000 hours as they erected CAMPUS GERMANY under the supervision of construction firm NUSSLI Adunic.

The German Pavilion has a prominent position on the main thoroughfare at the Expo, very close to the host United Arab Emirates Pavilion and Al Wasl Plaza, which forms the heart of the Expo site.

Tobias Wallisser was interviewed for Baumeister about the “Raumwelten 2020 2.0 - Please Install New Spatial System Now!”. The ninth edition of Raumwelten, the platform for scenography, architecture and media, took place from November 18 to 20, 2020. Tobias was the Raumwelten curator.

Wallisser chose “Install New Utopia” as the title for his Raumwelten panel. "Especially in times like these, when certainties evaporate, there is a great deal of uncertainty and you don't know exactly how things will continue, we need utopias, especially in architecture. We have to talk about how architecture deals with the social situation. For that we need visions.”

“Urban mining and recycling… is currently a relevant topic for architecture… You open up new design options by minimising the consumption of resources. It’s not about a defensive stance, i.e. using as little as possible, but about making something new out of something that is no longer needed. It's a much more active attitude. "

Tobias Wallisser will speak at a Europe of the Future Symposium on January 31st in a panel on “Landscape in movement, Current and future connections between Nature and Architecture”.  The moderator will be Renato Turri, World-Architects (CHE) and other panel speakers include Sixten Rahlff (3RW Arkitekter, NOR), Hans-Petter Bjørnådal (Bjørnådal Arkitektstudio, NOR) and Christoph Hesse (Christoph Hesse Architects, DEU).

The symposium is organsied by the European Cultural Centre (Russia and Italy) in conjunction with the exhibition “Public Architecture - Future of Europe” at the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow (31st January -10th May 2020). The exhibition presents realised/unrealised projects for the future of public architecture in Europe and LAVA is one of 40 architect firms featured.

Sinous seating softens hospital entrance.

Installation shot of our new seat at Blacktown Hospital in Sydney.

The playful sculpture is made from marine plywood. The curved form and flowing lines allow for multiple seating positions and encourage interaction, communication and relaxation. The seat measures 4 m and was manufactured by FINO Joinery. The seat by LAVA was commissioned by HARC for Stage 2 of the hospital redevelopment.

In 2016 Bosse designed an 80 piece glass eel chandelier for the Hospital foyer of Stage 1 in collaboration with Leanne Taubin and glass artist Ben Edols. See: https://lnkd.in/g98AiyU

How can nature and technology co-exist?

That’s the theme of a new exhibition Nature Meets Technology featuring LAVA's projects currently under construction in Germany at Architektur Galerie Berlin from 1 November  — 14 December 2019.

The exhibition shows how LAVA projects apply inspiration from nature and clues from technology to create unique architectural projects. Such as an energy storage centre in Heidelberg, transforming the infrastructure project into a new landmark. Terminal T3 at Frankfurt Airport, the ceiling of the passage reacts to the flow of visitors’ movements, controls light, and creates recreational areas. And the German Pavilion at EXPO 2020 in Dubai includes an adaptive facade that opens or closes the interior depending on weather conditions, thereby minimising energy consumption.

LAVA, with schlaich bergermann partner and Latz + Partner, are through to the 2nd round of a competition to design a new foot and cycle bridge over the Neckar River. Commissioned by the City of Heidelberg and the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Heidelberg the aim is to create a comfortable, fast and safe route with open and green spaces along the bridge.  

The minimalist design is a restrained bridge, coming from the Ochsenkopf along the eastern edge of the gneiss over the tops of the trees. Above the Neckar, the bridge widens to a seating landscape with balconies on the northern shore leading directly over the water. The ramp to the bridge, which climbs on a rampart, protects the middle of the Gneisenauplatz square from the street and the pedestrian and cycle paths are consistently intersection-free. The design sensitively integrates urban and green spaces. 

A second competition stage due in March 2020 will again include citizen participation.

LAVA was recently invited to imagine how the Pyrmont peninsula in Sydney could look by 2040. 

LAVA propsoed a mixed-use precinct with an entertainment and mixed dining flavour that would complement the new Barangaroo development on the opposite side of the water.

“At the moment there are just scattered buildings. What is needed is a way for them to be connected,” LAVA director Chris Bosse was quoted in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

“Pyrmont is so close to the city. There is enormous potential for residential, entertainment and hi-tech businesses all to be developed just five minutes from the CBD.”

Yesterday we had a big official event at Bayreuth for the new youth hostel. The ‘Y’ shape 180-bed sports hostel will feature innovative spatial configurations, sustainability at environmental, and structural and social levels, and integrated sporting facilities and include facilities for wheelchair athletes.

LAVA’s animated energy tower reinvents a 1950s - tank typology into a hub of sustainability; both a renewable energy storage and an educational destination for renewable energy. The external façade is animated by over 20,000 diamond shaped steel plates, the number of moving plates will indicate the number of households supplied by the renewable energy stored in the tower.

The WAFX Prize is awarded to future projects that identify key challenges that architects will need to address over the next ten years. WAF selected 11 winning future projects, which critically address issues such as climate, energy & carbon, water, re-use, smart cities, building technology.

LAVA has won 2nd prize in an international competition to design a new city in Malaysia.

LAVA’s concept sees the city defined not as one iconic building, nor as a skyline, but as a central public space, a real forest. 

Forest City, by Chinese developer Country Garden, is a new 20 square kilometre green smart city in southern Malaysia. Located on reclaimed land between Malaysia and Singapore, it will house 700,000 people with office towers, parks, hotels, shopping malls and an international school. The competition for a 24-hectare site within the development sought designs that improve the efficiency of land use, enhance the quality of space and environment, and include a landmark building embodying the notion of a forest city.

LAVA's globe trotting digital origami Tigers are appearing at the Festival Lausanne Lumières from November 24th to December 31st 2016!

We are one of 12 original art works from Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands, created around the theme of light to be installed throughout the town.

LAVA has won two awards at the 2016 International Architecture Awards for the KACST Headquarters in Saudi Arabia, currently under construction, and the bid for a Green Climate Fund Headquarters in Germany.

LAVA has unveiled a new project under construction in China.

LAVA’s masterplan for the mixed-use development consists of five buildings housing offices, residential, and retail. It features fluid building masses, improved positioning of the towers from different viewing directions, logical pedestrian movement and the removal of cars from the complex.

The twin towers form an iconic entrance to the city of Hangzhou. The high-rise towers are an interpretation of the Chinese characters meaning ‘gate’ or entrance to a city. Utilising extensive view studies the tower ensemble was positioned so it is recognisable as a twin structure, a gate, from both near and far. LAVA articulated the façade as two groups of long vertical fins wrapped around the buildings, a shimmering façade of fins. Fluid lines create zones within the tower elevations, whilst different colours of glass and varying depths of vertical fin elements generate refracted light effects animating the façade.

Construction on the twin towers starts in 2017, and the other buildings are under construction now.

LAVA's Digital origami elephants installation on display in Bangkok for the Kingdom of Light Festival.  150 of the LAVA elephants were on display in Bangkok for the second edition of 'Thailand Kingdom of Light' festival which ran until 5 January 2016 in the tourist district of Ratchaprasong.

LAVA was proud to be part of this magical event which will featured artists from across the world with some 1 million lights attracting more than 1 million visitors.

We have just opened our pavilion project for the Raumwelten Symposium. The inflatable structure is made of 100kg fabric and creates a space for up to 150 people. "More with less" at its best. And it will be re-used for the next three years!

The pavilion was designed by Tobias Wallisser and his student group, with Assistant Sebastian Schott, and Prof. Thomas Hundt. It was engineered by Form TL and built by Adunic from Switzerland.

Tobias Walliser is speaking at a RMIT symposium in Singapore: "INTRICATE REIFICATIONS EXPLORING THE ARCHITECTURE OF DIGITAL / MATERIAL TRANSLATIONS"

LAVA's plan to reinvigorate Berlin’s monumental Karl Marx Allee and increase residents’ quality of life is featured in the story. A project LAVA did for "50 ideas to celebrate 50 years of the Art Directors Club" in Germany was used as an illustration of the effects of future city planning on an existing city axis.

LAVA was inspired to use technology to improve the lives of Berlin's residents, by creating more of the sustainable, green space we all need. From ‘Energiewende’ to ‘Energiewalls’: the city as a second nature, where cars, people and wind installations coexist and communicate. A unique opportunity to reclaim the now very car-centric, historically loaded Karl Marx Allee for public good.

LAVA aimed to build a new kind of public space — one that blends old and new, horizontal and vertical while introducing cutting-edge wind technology, enabling a sustainable city life.

“Architecture of the future will not be about the shape, but about the intelligence of the system. The intelligence of the smallest unit results in the intelligence of the overall organism.” Chris Bosse

Chris Bosse envisions a future world where buildings are intelligent and responsive to external influences like air pressure, temperature, humidity, air pollution and solar radiation. Here, buildings are not singular structural entities (designed, serviced and accessed as isolated units), but rather, they are part of large networked systems, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

As co-founder of the architectural firm, Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA), Bosse explores new frontiers for architecture by combining future technologies with the principles behind naturally occurring systems. Like 20th century icons Buckminster Fuller and Frei Otto before him, Bosse studies the underlying design principles found in nature – soap bubbles, snowflakes and spider webs – to inspire new possible structures.

LAVA’s design for the Mission Hill Ice Rink facade is under construction!

LAVA was asked to design the facade for an existing ice rink in the city of Haikou, attractive seaside resort and capital of Hainan province, China.

The facade design was inspired by natural elements – wind, waves, ice - movement and energy.

The fin shaped glass louvres reference the blades of the skaters inside whilst the blue/cyan colour gradient suggests icebergs.

Attraction, seperation and alignment - flow simulations inspired the design of the Philips Light + Building pavilion.

LAVA’s latest project used gaming industry algorithms and natures’ swarming principles for the layout.

The sculptural pavilion, at the 2014 Light + Building international trade show in Frankfurt, used a ribbon-based routing concept derived from visitor flow simulations.

Natures’ swarm principles are found in both animal and human group behaviour. In unfamiliar buildings, cities and emergencies, for example, people will follow others but still keep their distance. Flocks of birds clearly reveal these principles of attraction, repulsion and alignment. 

They used a combination of custom-made and open-source code and algorithms used in the gaming industry. 

LAVA was involved in the initial concept and layout for the pavilion. The idea was to create a brand experience that united all Philips business groups, from consumer to professional lighting, in one fair stand. An elliptical ribbon route wrapped four elements: entrance with special light installations, a light-dome, market-arena and a VIP grandstand.

The project [with PTW] is shortlisted in the Interior Architecture category, up against 12 other projects ranging from residences to offices to a gallery.

There were 200 entries across all categories and the winners will be announced on 26 June. 

NSW Chapter President Joe Agius said the shortlist reflected the ‘best in current architectural practice’.

LAVA's creative solutions for the alpine environment are featured at the Palazzo Bollani during this years Venice Architecture Biennale. 

LAVA is one of 11 internationally renowned architectural firms featured in the Alpitecture Meets Biennale – Topographic Structures exhibition. Participants have all previously been involved in Alpitecture and include Hadid, GRAFT and BLAURAUM ARCHITEKTEN.

Alpitecture, an architecture platform to connect creative people to discuss Alps, technology and architecture, proposes new methods and models for living and working, plus future-orientated technologies for this extreme living space. “Looking at things from different angles generates unusual ideas.”

LAVA's Shenzhen Jungle Plaza and Masdar city centre feature in a new exhibition 'Think Ahead' at Scienceworks in Melbourne.

The Museum Victoria's interactive exhibition introduces young audiences to 'new ideas and concepts that encourage them to imagine the future'.

Past, present and forecasted representations of the future are explored through ten themes. One of these is ‘Cities’, with images of futuristic cities projected onto the exhibition wall.

LAVA'S 'Tower Skin', the proposed reskinning of the UTS Tower in Sydney, has been chosen as one of 11 'contemporary unbuilt projects' for the Australian virtual pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale.

It engages with the broader Venice Biennale theme of national identity and modernity.

Chris Bosse, director of LAVA and Adjunct Professor of UTS, said: “The UTS tower highlights how national characteristics were erased in favour of a single modern language in the 1960s. But where national identity is erased in the tower, ‘Tower Skin’ brings it back.”

LAVA’s solution to revitalising the generic style 1960s modernist building was to reskin it with a lightweight membrane envelope.

Surface tension allows a high tech membrane to freely stretch around the existing building, referencing the Sydney Opera House sails, nature, the harbour and all that is Sydney.

“It addresses the timescales of fashion and technology versus building life spans, whilst incorporating 21st century technologies with local identity to achieve maximum visual impact with minimal material effort,” added Bosse.

21 unrealised Australian projects will be brought to life through three-dimensional augmented models, images, voiceovers and animations in the virtual exhibition ‘Augmented Australia 1914-2014’.

Three LAVA projects are Winners in the international Iconic Awards. 

A City of Clouds masterplan in the desert, a Martian writing centre for young people in inner city Sydney and a new concept for living in Berlin are all winners in the 2013 Iconic Awards, Germany. 

LAVA’s City of Clouds is a winner in the Concept Visionary Architecture – this masterplan for a new city is enclosed under an artificial ‘cloud’ surface that mimics the action of the atmospheric process creating comfort in an extreme environment.

Moritz Gruppe's THE:SQUARE is a Winner in the Concept Visionary Living & Working - this mixed use development themed with Life, Nature, Sport is close to Berlin's centre and Europe’s largest urban nature reserve and the Olympics training centre.

The Martian Embassy, an immersive space of oscillating plywood ribs brought to life by red planet light and sound projections is a Winner in the Interior Retail category.

The Martian Embassy has already won three other architectural awards, one commendation and is shortlisted for the IDEA awards.

The Iconic Awards are a cross-disciplinary international architectural competition of the German Design Council that focuses on outstanding, holistic architecture and interior design. The highest award, Best of Best, is given in five competition categories whilst outstanding projects are given the award ‘Winner’. The German Design Council was established in 1953 and aims to communicate design expertise amongst the wider public.

Chris Bosse is one of twelve Australian designers exhibiting in CUSP: Designing into the Next Decade at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, Sydney, 6 July - 1 September 2013 and then travelling Australia-wide.

Exploring the potential of design in our lives, Object Gallery's CUSP designers 'generate ideas that could change the way we inhabit the world’. 

Cloud City: An urban ecosystem is a sculptural rendition of Bosse’s vision of a future city - a soaring, stretched membrane-cloud anchored to the ‘city’ on the gallery floor by high-rise towers that have been re-skinned and revitalised. 

‘The future is not about what buildings look like, but how they perform, interact and how they connect with each other. Think of a coral reef, where thousands of species thrive in coexistence of each other and the elements, air, water and sun. The reef is like the city of the future.’

‘Our installation asks: can cities of the future be organisms that respond and adapt to their environment?’

The networked city is a connected, inter-dependent organism where buildings are not singular structural entities (designed, serviced and accessed as isolated units), but part of large networked system. 

An distributed cloud communicates, shares smart building technology and joint infrastructure, connectivity and data transfer allowing transport, housing and urban infrastructure to adapt in response. 

Bosse replaces outdated passive building facades of the skyscraper with high-performance smart translucent cocoons that create their own microclimate, generate energy, collect rainwater and improve the distribution of natural daylight. By re-skinning these inefficient buildings the past is transformed into ‘super-abled’ buildings.

Following the Casula showing the CUSP exhibition visits Launceston, Adelaide, Dubbo, Port Macquarie, Brisbane and Mornington Peninsula from 2013-2015.

Tobias Wallisser recently spoke at Daimler’s ‘Future Talk – How utopian is the future?’ in Berlin. 

Experts from Daimler discussed visionary ideas with external specialists from different fields including Philipp Hübl, Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Stuttgart, and Martina Mara from the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz, Austria. 

“Every society shapes its surroundings to meet its needs,” said Wallisser. “Privacy plays a key part in that. Private space is a luxury and implies a need for protection and security. At the same time, we look for a sense of togetherness, and closeness to the community. This is paradoxical, but human….”

We were very excited about the opportunity to combine our interest in nature and technology. We didn’t end up winning but thought we’d share this image of the zoo reception and entrance [a 'birds nest' of bamboo] with you.

With our partners Shanghai Landscape Design Institute and Battle McCarthy we took the competition brief from being a 'zoo beside a botanical garden and lake' to becoming a hub for applied bio-tech research.

While we didn’t make special provisions for zodiac animals who knows what snakes may slither into the zoo this year!

LAVA have realised their first bridge design in Europe, a pedestrian bridge in Rotterdam, inspired by the efficiency and beauty in nature’s geometries.

FDN Engineering and Construction have named it the ‘Bosse Bridge’ and the 19m long bridge made from nine cubes of concrete has just been constructed in Rotterdam.

FDN’s demonstration project aims to show that ultra high strength concrete bridges with a very thin concrete deck are possible. It can carry a twelve tonne vehicle and the modular system means a bridge 30m x 5m can be transported in twenty-foot containers to all parts of the world economically.

LAVA's design references branching structures and the playful railing brings together LAVA's core interest in nature, technology and man.

FDN also have a Bionic Bridge design inspired by LAVA's Bionic Tower.

Today Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales, officially opened the Martian Embassy in Sydney.

She loved the whale/time tunnel interior created by the LAVA team with our amazing partners Will O'Rourke and The Glue Society. 

The Martian Embassy was designed as an immersive space of oscillating plywood ribs brought to life by red planet light and sound projections for The Sydney Story Factory, a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people in Sydney. Cath Keenan, pictured with Chris Bosse, is the director of the Factory.

The design is inspired by the stuff great stories are made of - Moby Dick, H. G. Wells' Time Machine and 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick.

The concept is to awaken creativity in kids, so the design acts as a trigger, firing up the engines of imagination. It’s an intergalactic journey - from the embassy, at the street entrance, to the shop full of red planet traveller essentials, to the classroom. By the time kids reach the writing classes they have forgotten they are in “school”.

LAVA has created a new typology for youth hostels with the revisioning of the Berchtesgaden near Munich, Germany.
Gone are the daggy dormitory rooms and impersonal spaces of your typical hostel.The new design features individualised rooms, bold colours, local materials and craftsmanship, and multipurpose zones. The sustainable makeover includes a low energy facade, floor heating, and the installation of a bimass pellet heating system. Built‐in furniture and integrated storage avoids the ubiquitous barracks style environment.The hostel refurbishment was a unique opportunity to explore some of LAVA's  experiments in space and apply sustainable technologies to an existing building.And if you want to sleep in one of LAVA's funky new bedrooms check out the hostel site http://www.design-jugendherberge-berchtesgaden.de/

LAVA's design for the Myer Spring/Summer Collection Launch 2010/2011 has been shortlisted under the 'event' category at the 2011 IDEA awards.Created with Gloss Creative, LAVA's set, 'Shells, Architects of the Ocean', was a giant shell measuring 18 x 5 metres.Using 2000 precisely cut pieces of pine intricately worked together, the sculptural piece was dramatically silhouetted with striking light effects. Inspired by the geometry of the triton shell it was digitised and sliced into buildable components to create a theatrical setting.

A new office fit out in Melbourne features screens designed by LAVA for Schiavello's Climate range.The workspace at 500 Collins St, Melbourne for pharmaceutical and medication delivery company, Hospira, was designed by interior architecture consultancy Artillery and used Schiavello's latest workplace program, Climate, for all 190 work-points.LAVA's 'forest' markers were chosen as the screens to accompany Climate; they were chosen in meadow, a vibrant green shade, invoking the rainforest.

LAVA`s Chris Bosse has sliced up the 1967 Panton chair as part of the Re-loved: designer stories at the Powerhouse Museum 31 July – 30 September.
Bosse is one of several designers commissioned by the Powerhouse to use a pre-loved chair to tell a story about a piece of furniture they love.

“We’ve chosen to represent this shape as slices, similar to an MRI scan in order to make visible its complex 3dimensional geometry. The chair is metaphorically and physically carved out of a sliced box, ” says Bosse.
“The project retro-digitises the chair design, although it was the chair that preceded the digital design revolution.” Bosse believes that today we understand better how to derive form from geometry, such as the underlying geometries in nature, and can incorporate buildability into the form from the inception through parametric modeling techniques.

Re-loved is on display at the Powerhouse Museum from 31 July – 30 September 2010 during the Sydney Design Festival.

We just hosted a compelling talk “Make, Use, Adapt, Repeat,” by Edoardo Tibuzzi, Design Director, and Alessandro Margnelli, Technical Director, from AKT II at our Berlin office. 

Edoardo and Alessandro offered valuable insights into the hashtag#synergy between practice and research.  Their presentation highlighted both past and current projects of AKT II and provided a forward-looking perspective on the role of AI in AEC.

Christian Tschersich spoke on how the German Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka responds to these questions at a forum at Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory last week.

 There was an open tour of the exhibition 'Woods Up!' where each exhibition architect presented their project, followed by a podium discussion split into four thematic sessions.

"Wood's Up! has opened at Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin.

On display is our German Pavillon design for EXPO 2025, Osaka, Japan.

The exhibition presents 16 realised and planned timber buildings of different typologies exploring the use of timber and hybrid timber construction to conserve resources and reduce CO2 emissions. The projects at different scales demonstrate timber's flexibility, load-bearing capacity and prefabrication capabilities, and advantages in terms of thermal insulation, health and aesthetics.

The design for the Kuwait Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Japan was announced recently.

Designboom says: "The Kuwaiti delegation unveils the pavilion design for World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Picking up on Kuwait’s characteristic landscape and traditions, the structure features a distinctive silhouette with two symbolic wings inviting visitors inside. High ceilings, transparent roofs, and layered spaces complete the architecture, while premium materials are seamlessly integrated with lush greenery and state-of-the-art technology."

LAVA's partners on the project are: NUSSLI Group construction, insglück content concept and exhibition design, with schlaich bergermann structural design, Japanese architect of record Tokuoka Sekkei and Japanese construction company Mugishima Construction.

LAVA's Christian Tschersich and Andreas Horbelt from facts and fiction presented the German Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka as part of the Circular Cooperation Network Days in the Circle Lounge at imm cologne. 

The Pavilion is a project of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and will have a circular design, a living exhibit for sustainable practices.

Last week, the Wa! Germany project team gathered in Berlin to discuss the latest progress and LAVA presented the schematic design and the open space planning with plans and floor plans. We looked at the plant list, planting plan, and tree placement. And material samples, which making the vision of the project more tangible. A 3D animation brought to life the restaurant, shop and VIP area.

The Zhejiang Gate Towers project (now renamed the "Wisdom Towers') has been recently completed. 

LAVA's original design of the two towers was based on the Chinese characters for ‘gate’, and featured a shimmering façade of fins. Working with our partners SOL and ZIAD we submitted our designs in 2014/2015.

This is what the German Pavilion looks like now.... 

Expo 2020 Dubai ended just four months ago and already a large part of the pavilion has been dismantled. 

The various building components will largely be reused or recycled. The sandwich panels of the façade, for example, will be reused, the concrete will be recycled.

The wonderful LAVA team visted the German Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

LAVA's Stuttgart office designed the 6,000 square metre marketplace for the new Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport, currently under construction. It features organically-shaped ‘island’ seating areas and a sculptural ceiling of aluminium tubes bringing daylight deep into the area.

Explains LAVA director Alexander Rieck: “In 2016 LAVA started work on the atmospheric design. We based it on our research into the natural flow of passengers and the process of way-finding and shopping”.

“Like islands in a fast-flowing river, lounge areas allow rest and relief from the movement of people. Located under the sculptural cloud tubes, they allow travellers to receive the full spectrum of natural sunlight. This is important for wellbeing and allows people to readjust their biorhythm according to the actual time.”

“The design of the reflective cloud itself is also informed by the flow of passengers and on fabrication algorithms.”

How do you design a building that can cope with hot desert heat?
Located in the challenging environment of Dubai our goals for the German Pavilion @expo2020 were to be sustainable, reduce resource consumption and increase circularity.
In close cooperation with climate engineers Transsolar we developed a concept of graded temperature zones. Combining a human centred design perspective with energy efficiency, the building unfolds with the graded temperature zones creating a transition from the exterior climate to the fully air conditioned spaces. This avoids heat stress for visitors - a new approach to conditioning indoor climate that helps to save energy.

15 FEBRUARY 2021

The German Pavilion has achieved structural works completion, marking another construction milestone. An average of 166 construction workers have been on the site every day since August 2019, clocking up around 472,000 hours.

The theme of Expo 2020 Dubai, “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, is divided into three subthemes, each with its own district: sustainability, mobility and opportunity. The German Pavilion, in the sustainability section, has a prominent position on the main thoroughfare of the Expo, very close to the host United Arab Emirates Pavilion and Al Wasl Plaza, which forms the heart of the Expo site. 

Its eight months to go until Expo 2020 Dubai opens in October 2021.

Visitors interact with our Life Hamburg project on display at the exhibition "Public Architecture – Future for Europe" in Moscow earlier this year.

Life Hamburg features a variety of educational spaces for people of all ages in the German city of Hamburg. 

LAVA joined forces with Cityplot, an urban agricultural collective, to design a project that combines spaces with different functions, from platforms for applied learning to secluded places for reflection.

LAVA, with partner ASPECT Studio, has won the international competition to design the 16 hectare Central Park in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with construction due to start in 2020.

Gently elevated curving pedestrian walkways are patterned on 19th century railway tracks built by the French. Sunken gardens provide performance and play spaces and connect to an underground shopping area linking to the new metro station. Artificial trees provide shelter and harvest water and energy.

LAVA has won an International Architecture Award for ‘Technical and Research’ for its Urban Production 4.0. 

The vision is for a modern productive working environment, the transformation with a design that embodies innovation, inspiration, precision and responsibility, made visible through its iconographic, sustainable architectural concept.

Urban design principles integrate city and workplace, which offers quality work-life and a flexibility for future developments within the city.

The masterplan acts as a network in which four atria are arranged around the inner avenue, which connects all public entrances to their respective zones.

LAVA with A24 Landschafts GmbH have won a competition for the Synergy Park Lühn in Lingen, a new trade and technology park to be built on ten hectares. LühnBau announced a two-phase international architecture competition seeking: Innovation; Synergy; and Work-life balance.

Preparations for the issuing of a building permit are underway together with the master plan. LAVA will start the building design in June.

LAVA' s new kindergarten is under construciton in Vinh Vietnam. Our partners are Module K.

EcoKid Kindergarten features an indoor-outdoor playful, safe and fun environment for the next generation of Vietnamese children. A 5,000 sqm series of buildings create indoor and outdoor spaces that are playful and safe while making an architectural statement. The buildings form three courtyards and playgrounds with a forest in between, with breezes from the adjacent lake adding to the natural experience. World-class interiors will educate, challenge and entertain children.
